Contramano is what happens when Argentine angst meets New York City attitude.
Built on the driving rhythms of an electric cello, Contramano’s sound blends punk, chamber, world, prog, and electronica.
Socially conscious lyrics with an existential bent—in Spanish and English—create a patois for the new global nomad.
The live shows make a club feel like a stadium, with video displays, a singer prone to roaming the room and audience members
taking a turn on his cello and guitar.
Originally formed by Pablo Cubarle in 2003, Contramano has released two cd’s, Contramano (2005) and Unsatisfecho (2007).
They have opened for Rasputina and Bajofondo Tango Club, toured the eastern United States, Canada, LA, San Francisco and
Buenos Aires and received rave reviews from The Washington Post, New York Press, New York Times, El Diario, HOY, Flavorpill,
Sixeyes, Fluxblog, Buzzaw Haircut and many, many other esteemed publications.

Unsatisfecho,
the new release from Contramano, is a breakout album. The punky
chamber-pop trio has managed to fuse
classical and pop sensibilities
for a work with all the dramatic strokes of a concept album, yet
plenty of spontaneous attitude.
A new orchestrated sophistication,
only hinted at in their self-titled début, is given full
range on Unsatisfecho, and Pablo
Cubarle’s masterful cello
is perfectly suited for the deeper emotional depths plumbed here.
In Without a Choice,
guitar and strings play off each other like a manic conversation
intent on revelation. Punk spirit is
channeled into the hooligan
vibe of Jugando With Ghosts, the album’s
straightaway hit, in I Was There, So Were You and
Bad Memory, the cello lingers and draws out moments
of pure musical beauty. Throughout, Pablo’s lyrics explore
the in-between states of desire and ambition. Perhaps the Argentine
has finally become a New Yorker.
What remains unchanged is Contramano’s
deft melodies and spot-on songwriting backed by driving rhythms.
The band’s poptendencies prove irrepressible and quirky touches
like lightning-fast changes in tempo and Pablo’s arching vocal
stylings are pure Contramano.
Unsatisfecho undoubtedly makes Contramano a band to watch.
